Qualification for Membership:
To be eligible for membership in the Association of Research Institutes in Art History (ARIAH), an institution must sponsor a regular and continuing program of subsidized residential fellowships for scholars to conduct independent and advanced research on art history at that institution’s physical site.

1) Institution Type: Eligible institutions can take various forms, including a museum, library, university, or independent institute, provided they foster a scholarly community and offer access to significant primary resources that can support research on art history, architecture, and related fields.

2) Geographic Parameters: Institutions located anywhere in the Americas, or affiliated with parent institutes located in the Americas, are eligible for membership.

3) Fellowships: The fellowship application process should be open and competitive. At least some of the fellowships offered by an institution should be available to researchers not affiliated with that institution or its partners. The assessment of fellowship applications and selection of recipients should be carried out by a peer review process that may include institutional staff and scholars, as well as outside reviewers.

4) Related Scholarly Activities: It will be advantageous, but not mandatory, for institutions interested in membership to produce scholarly publications, symposia, or other programming that can provide fellows with opportunities for the presentation of their research.
