The programs of the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts include fellowships, internships, meetings, research, and publications. These are privately funded through endowments and grants to the National Gallery of Art. The permanent staff includes three deans, an administrator, and seven support staff members. In addition, postdoctoral research associates support the research projects of the Center’s deans and professors. A board of advisors, comprising seven or eight distinguished historians of art or related disciplines appointed to rotating terms, meets annually to consider policies and programs. Members of the board as well as other invited scholars make up selection committees to review applications for fellowships at the Center. Fellowship, professorial appointments, and internships are recommended to the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Art for approval. Fellows have access to the notable resources represented by the art collections, the library, and the image collections of the National Gallery of Art, as well as to the Library of Congress and other specialized research libraries and collections in the Washington area.
