The Research Stay Program (RSP) of the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (IIE) at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) exists to advance scholarship in Latin American Art. Available to established scholars and for the development of postdoctoral research on the Art of Latin America and its diasporas from the Pre-Columbian period to the Contemporary era, short- and long-term fellowships are offered to conduct research in Art history, Visual culture, and in the Humanities.
With campus in Mexico City and in Oaxaca city, the IIE is a hub for cutting edge research grounded on a nine-decade tradition of art historical studies with a commitment to attend urgent social debates coming from the Global South and decolonial views. RSP scholars are hosted by one of our more than 60 tenured faculty members: many of them working closely with UNAM’s Art History Graduate Program, the largest of its kind in the Spanish-speaking world.
We encourage scholars to take advantage of the interdisciplinary approach developed by the IIE’s technical departments: Laboratory for the Diagnosis of Works of Art; Photographic Archive; Historical and Documentary Research Archive; Arts Information Unit; and two specialized Libraries. This constellation of research resources, the impressive collections held in Mexican museums, archives, and archaeological sites, and the UNAM’s dynamic community offer an exceptional opportunity for the pursuit of new narratives belonging to Latin American Art.
The specific requirements for postdoctoral fellowships and research stays are published on our website. To apply interested parties must count with the approval of an IIE faculty member. Postdoctoral fellowships are awarded twice a year. Funds for postdoctoral researchers may be offered by CONACYT (Mexico’s National Science Foundation) or UNAM.
Visiting scholars can apply for research stays at any time. We do not offer financial aid for these stays. Instead, we do grant access to the use of in-kind resources from the IIE.
Application Deadline: May 31, 2024
