The Research department at the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) supports research into the history of British art and culture across all time periods and throughout the geography of empire. We strive to create a vibrant research culture at the YCBA by supporting and coordinating activities across the museum, overseeing a robust program of awards, fellowships, and residencies to facilitate research at all levels, and taking a leading role in the creation of research initiatives related to the museum’s collections and exhibition schedule. The department values collaborations, creative practice, partnerships, and scholarship that challenge and celebrate all aspects of historic and contemporary British art and culture. We are particularly interested in communicating new knowledge and fresh insights with a broad audience. The Research department is a central part of the YCBA, which holds the largest collection of British paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, rare books, and manuscripts outside the United Kingdom. The museum also houses an extensive Reference Library and Archives with material related to British art and culture from historic periods to the present.
Every year, the Yale Center for British Art through its Research department offers short-term residential awards to artists, curators, doctoral candidates, scholars, and writers to access the YCBA's collections and library. Awardees are given a dedicated working space in the museum's Reference Library and are encouraged to participate in events and programs, as well as to engage with the scholarly community of the university. They can also take advantage of the extensive collections at other Yale museums and libraries.
Awards may be held for one to three consecutive months. They cover the cost of a J1 visa, travel to and from New Haven, accommodations, and a living allowance. Assistance with immigration processes will be provided where possible. Awardees are required to be in residence in New Haven for the duration of their award and must be free of all other significant professional responsibilities during their stay.
Application Deadline: January 5, 2024
